Frontline Commando puts you in the boots of an elite one man special forces team. No need for teammates or backup here, uh-uh, you got this. Frontline Commando feels like a big budget Hollywood action flick where the star of the movie lays waste to wave after wave of armed gunman while seemingly being unfazed by the hail of gunfire headed his direction. Just imagine that Rambo and Chuck Norris had a kid and you gave that kid a machine gun, body armor, and steroids.

Frontline Commando is a third-person tactical shooter set somewhere in the Middle East with lots and lots of bad guys, but don’t worry you have an arsenal of bad ass guns. The controls are silky smooth and ultra precise, especially for a touch-screen device. This is definitely one of the best feeling shooters I’ve ever played on a tablet. With a little bit of practice I was pulling off head-shot after head-shot with ease. Going into each mission you are able to choose two guns from your available arsenal of weapons to take with you into battle. You must choose wisely because you only have these two weapons during the mission that you can switch between and choosing poorly will make the mission much more difficult than it has to be. Even though you only have two weapons with you at a time, you are given unlimited ammo. Just like my daddy used to say, “Don’t take a gun to a gun fight, unless you have unlimited bullets.” This game isn’t all spray and pray though, you have strategic cover that you will need to duck behind. Depending on the map there are usually 3-4 positions that you can switch between at any point and one of these positions has your ammo to refill your guns. So there are “tactics” that you will need to employ in order to complete the missions.

There are essentially three types of missions that you can go on in Frontline Commando: Survival, Assassination, and my favorite, Kill Everything. In a survival mission you simply need to survive until the clock hits zero. Once it does the air strikes arrive killing all the badies and earning you a victory. In assassination missions your goal is to take out a specific target. If you can spot that target and kill him quickly, you won’t need to waste your ammo killing all of his minions. But honestly what fun is that? Do you think Rambo or Chuck Norris would leave anyone alive? And of course the standard mission type, kill everything, is self explanatory. And don’t worry, you don’t need to concern yourself with collateral damage in this game, if it moves shoot it.

As you complete each mission on your tour through enemy territory you will be showered with money. And what’s a deadly soldier of fortune going to do with his money? Well buy bigger guns of course! And in this regard Frontline Commando really shines. As you progress through the game you will unlock ever deadlier and deadlier weapons which you can purchase with the previously mentioned in-game currency. There are four types of guns to choose from: assault, sniper, shotgun, and launcher. Each weapon excels at a different task. The assault weapons are great for general fire fights. Sniper rifles are great for taking out long range targets or just for racking up head shots. The shotguns are perfect for close quarters combat or for taking out a large groups of would-be enemies. And the launcher is great for general mayhem or for taking out vehicles large and small.
But just because you have the biggest baddest weapons, it doesn’t guarantee your survival. After all you’re still squishy bag of blood and bones. Luckily, you can also purchase body armor upgrades, med-kits, and the frontline commando's best friend the air-strike for those dire moments when all hope seems to be lost.
They only negative with this game is that despite being paid for your missions you’ll find that you still won’t have enough money to buy the best weapons. If you want to progress through the game and get better gear you’ll need to reach for your wallet and purchase more in-game currency with your real-life currency. Luckily by the time you will need to cough up your hard earned cash, you’ll be so hooked with this excellent title that you’ll sell you first born just to buy better guns (please don’t actually do that). On the bright side, Frontline Commando is free so dropping a couple Washington’s on this title is well worth it.

Frontline Commando is a wildly fun and addictive shooter that’ll have your heart pounding and your ammo clips empty. With its precise controls and wide arsenal of weapons it’ll have you coming back for more. Even if you decide not to drop any coin on this title it’s well worth playing up until the point where you’ll need to.
